What Is a Toric Contact Lens?

What Is a Toric Contact Lens?

A toric contact lens is a special type of contact lens that is specifically designed to correct for astigmatism. Astigmatism is a condition where the curvature of your eye’s surface is not perfectly spherical, causing light to focus at slightly different points depending on which direction it comes from. A toric contact lens has a different curvature than a regular contact lens to compensate for this issue and ensure that the light focuses properly on your retina.

Two Types of Toric Lenses

There are generally two types of toric lenses: rigid gas permeable (RGP) contacts and soft lenses. RGP contacts are made of a special type of material that allows oxygen to pass through, making them more breathable than traditional soft lenses. While many people find RGP lenses uncomfortable to wear at first, they are generally thought to be more durable and longer-lasting than soft lenses.

Soft toric contact lenses are made of a soft gel material that molds easily to the shape of your eye. They come in both disposable and non-disposable varieties and are often more comfortable than rigid gas-permeable contacts. However, because of their soft material, they tend to not last as long as RGP contacts and often need to be replaced more frequently.

What to Expect

If you have astigmatism and are looking for a way to correct your vision, talk to your eye doctor about whether a toric lens is right for you. With the right type of lens and a little bit of practice, you can achieve excellent vision with minimal discomfort. Toric contact lenses are also just as effective and easy to use as traditional contact lenses so you won’t even be able to tell the difference.
